Weelio
Assisted Wheelchair Services
at Indian Railway stations
Weelio
Weelio aims to solve problems faced by the senior citizens or the disabled, while travelling on Indian Railways and enable them to travel independently and confidently.
The app helps disabled citizens connect to willing vendors at major railway stations, and access on demand wheelchair assistance to have a hassle free train boarding and deboarding experience.
Background
While travelling from Mumbai Railway station. We observed a problem that is experienced by people whose ability to walk is limited or inefficient, while travelling with a relative who is paralyzed on one side.
Problems faced
Issuing the wheel chair by depositing an IDcard
Travelling from one platform to another with luggage along with pushing the chair
Since the lift wasn't working and ramps were not available, we had to lift the wheel chair to take it to the next level via stairs
Return the chair to another platform
Constraints
Low budget
Inadequate infrastructure at medium and small railway stations of tier 2 and tier 3 cities
Maintenance of the Wheel chair
Management officials required
Problem Statement
How can we enhance the accessibility and usability of the wheel chair service at Indian railway stations.
End Goals
Take a step towards disable friendly railway station
Reduce the time required in the process of issuing and depositing the wheelchair
Finding the location of the service at Railway Station easily
Redesigning the wheel chair for better usability for the traveler
Existing E - Wheel Chair Service
Not easy to locate on the IRCTC website
Location of wheel chair services is not shown in the final booking details
Booking only through PNR number and one booking per PNR
Information required to make booking can be reduced
Role playing at the railway station
Our Observations :
Dependency on people while traveling.
Difficult to find wheel chair services.
Inconvenient ergonomics of the infrastructure at the stations. eg seating, ticket counters, washroom ramps and stairways.
Analysis of the wheel chair
Heavy : It weighs 12 kilos, making it difficult for users to propel themselves.
It is also difficult for co travelers to
carry the chair through stairs
Maintenance : chairs are not
maintained properly, making them
dirty, rusted and inconvenient to use
